Staten Island Advance & SILive win awards for coverage of Eric Garner story

(Staten Island Advance/Bill Lyons) The Staten Island Advance was honored for its coverage of the controversial Eric Garner case in the 2015 New York State Associated Press awards. Staffers received a first place award for multimedia, for their work from July 2014 through year's end. The staff also received a second place award for outstanding spot news reporting of the Garner grand jury decision. The Garner case received blanket coverage, and the Advance work was judged against that of some of the nation's largest newspapers. Police officers stopped Garner for a routine matter related to his selling cigarettes. They placed him in a chokehold and he died, as the incident was videotaped. NJ Advance Media photographer wins top international award

Aristide Economopoulos with his Arts and Culture award at the Sony World Photography Awards 2015 held at the London Hilton on April 23, 2015.Credit: Ian Gavan Aristide Economopoulos of NJ Advance Media has been honored with the 2015 Sony World Photography Award for Arts & Culture. He received the award for his moving work covering high school proms in New Jersey. Economopoulos was a staff photographer with the Star-Ledger for 14 years before joining NJ Advance Media last year. His work can be seen on NJ.com.
