Alabama Media Group’s Investigative Journalism Lab Delivers Special Report on Alabama Prisons Collection of Stories Focuses On Allegations Surrounding Prison System Alabama Media Group is delivering a special report in The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times and Mobile Press-Register on Sunday, June 22. The special report presents a fresh overview and new findings from an ongoing investigation into Alabama’s prisons problems and the history of abuse uncovered at Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women. AL.com has explored the problem in greater detail as part of the Alabama Investigative Journalism Lab, launched this year by Alabama Media Group. I originally planned to write a mid-year update on all the progress we’ve made since January but that would have resulted in a multi-page document that would have taken way too long to read. So here’s a short note instead about everything our teams have collectively accomplished in the past few weeks, which is indicative of the success we’re achieving and the momentum we are building. We continue to grow our digital audience and revenues by delivering good products and services to our readers and advertisers while engaging aggressively with new and traditional competitors. Our digital audience growth has been extraordinary. Advance Local sites grew 43 percent year-over-year in our comScore audience in April and 37 percent in May -- and now rank #9 nationally among comScore’s General News sites (which include Yahoo News, NBC News and CNN). MLive Media Group wins 21 first-place Michigan AP awards

MLive Media Group has won 21 first-place awards from the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors . The awards were handed out Sunday afternoon for the 2013 newspaper competition. The Kalamazoo Gazette also earned first place in general excellence. The Grand Rapids Press was awarded second place for General Excellence in Division 3. In Division 2, The Flint Journal got second place, and in Division 1 The Jackson Citizen Patriot received third place. First place awards included Best Public Service for the The Flint Journal's “#IWantYouToKnow.” MLive also swept 12 categories in Division 2:, including Best Public Service, Best Sustained Coverage of a Single Sports Event and Best Multimedia Journalist.
